Field Implementation

 

The main objective of the Implementation Component is large scale and sustainable implementation of IPM practices in Pakistan , rationalizing the use of pesticides while maintaining production levels and increasing farmer’s profit.

 

The National IPM Programme is being implemented to:

 

a.       Prepare the farmers to comply with the WTO obligations regarding pesticide residues in the exportable commodities.

b.      Reduce poverty of the farming community by increasing profitability of the farmers through rationalized use of pesticides.

c.       Reduce health hazards to the pesticide users in particular and the consumers in general.

d.      Help ameliorate environment through reduced pollution and increased biodiversity.

e.       Reduce pesticide use by about 50% in the project area without compromising the yield per hectare.

f.        Organize farming community by establishment of farmer associations under the TOF/FFS system.

 

In order to achieve the above objectives, the following specific targets are set under the Implementation Component of IPM:

 

·   Training of about 500 extension staff and 55,000 farmers in IPM technologies and approaches through 20 Training of Facilitators (TOF) and holding of 840 Farmer Field Schools (FFS).

·  Development of 840 village organizations in 20 districts of Pakistan by adopting FFS approach.

·   Training of 250 teachers of colleges and universities in IPM philosophy.

 

The field implementation of IPM is effected in close collaboration with Provincial Agriculture Departments. IPM Programme coordinates various activities in different provinces so that the inter-provincial experience sharing is developed. The programme also coordinates with various national agencies, NGOs and international organizations for promoting effective IPM practices in the country. Agricultural Officers with the help of Field Assistants are the main force for implementing IPM activities, while EDOs/DDOs (Agriculture) also monitor the activities and keep contact with Provincial Coordinator
